Virtual and Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality (short: AR) is a new way of human-computer-interaction, where virtual objects are added to real scenes provided by a video camera in real time. They are inserted in the right positions and complement the real picture. The digital information merges with the user’s environment so that the user can perceive currently important information directly where it is needed.

Augmented Reality shows its strength when objects cannot be changed physically, e.g. they cannot be turned off (like in production facilities) or they are unique (museum). Since the year 2000 C-LAB has been working intensely on the research and development of this technology and so far has shown the enormous potential of Augmented Reality in different projects.

Especially in combination with other technologies like Wearable Computing, AR is suitable for supporting industrial-maintenance processes. But it can also play its strength in the area of presentation and visualization of high-quality products or hidden procedures. C-LAB used this characteristic in the funded research project AMIRE together with partners like OMV to create a training application for complex facilities.

Beside this industrial application Augmented Reality is also used in edutainment applications.

We apply the potential of AR together with our customers and create individual AR solutions using the results and competencies from our projects.

In a joint assessment we analyze which business processes are suitable for AR support. For these processes an in-depth analysis of the customers requirements is performed. We take the new requirements into account develop a feasibility and potential study and optimize the concerned business processes.

As Augmented Reality solutions should directly support the individual user, an exact analysis and a deep understanding of the user processes is needed. Therefore, we utilize our usability experience and competence combined with the well-founded technical competence to develop customer-specific AR-scenarios especially tailored to the addressed user. We realize these scenarios for our customers from the first concept and implementation up to a complete integration into the customer’s environment.
